Severe Thunderstorm Warning – Southeast Queensland
for DAMAGING WINDS, LARGE HAILSTONES, and HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in parts of Ipswich, Gympie, Somerset, Western Downs, South Burnett, Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley Council Areas.

Issued at 5:52 pm Wednesday, 28 October 2020.

Severe thunderstorms are quickly becoming more extensive across Southeast Queensland.

Weather Situation: Severe thunderstorms are beginning to develop and expected to become stronger and more extensive later this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:50 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near the area west of Toogoolawah and the ranges between Biggenden and Tiaro. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast. They are forecast to affect the area southwest of Esk, the area west of Esk and the ranges north of Jandowae by 6:20 pm and Mt Mowbullan, Marburg and Bell by 6:50 pm.

Damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely.

4-5cm hail was reported at Proston and Banana earlier this afternoon.

Brisbane & Sunshine Coast Weather Forecast

Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop from about Dalby to the Wide Bay areas today.  These storms will be heading mostly southeast, some may deviate from the track and take more easterly, northeasterly, and southerly.

Large hailstones, torrential rain, frequent to dangerous lightning, and destructive winds that cause property damage is possible.

Today is particularly warned for dangerous thunderstorms in the SE Queensland and Sunshine Coast areas.

Please be prepared for serious property damage, fallen trees, and powerlines. In some situations please do not drive into severe thunderstorms as your car could sustain serious damage from wind and extremely large hailstones.

This severe weather event is being closely monitored by Government and local weather experts for potentially dangerous situations if these severe thunderstorms do occur.

The timing of the exact locations and when these severe thunderstorms will occur is not exactly sure, but anywhere in an area from about Brisbane north these dangerous thunderstorms are possible.

South Brisbane & the Gold Coast also have a weather warning out.

Possible rotating supercell thunderstorms are expected to develop in isolated areas, these thunderstorms are extremely dangerous and should not be underestimated.
